Re: Oregon ends residency requirement for assisted suicide

I don't know if you can afford to do it, but it may be worth your time to run advertisements in end of life care magazines now. I don't know how commercial you want your venture to be, but this is probably a good opportunity to start expanding it.

Oregon ends residency requirement for assisted suicide

From MSNBC. This seems vaguely relevant. Oregon will no longer require people to be residents of the state to use its law allowing terminally ill people to receive lethal medication, after a lawsuit challenged the requirement as unconstitutional. In a settlement filed in U.S. District Court in Portl...

Re: Micromorts avoided per dollar

The more I research, the more convinced I am that *any* method that preserves the basic structure of the brain intact will work. I think chemical preservation will work. I think cryopreservation will work - provided, that is, that the fragile supply of care and liquid nitrogen is uninterrupted. I th...

Re: Surviving World War III

Another point of concern. You're just outside the drought zone, though it is expanding slowly - but Alcor isn't.

Could Ötzi the Ice Man ever be revived?

For those of you who don't know, Ötzi was a Bronze Age traveler whose mostly intact body was discovered frozen in the Alps bordering Austria and Italy in 1991. His brain was reasonably well preserved , enough to be scannable - obviously damaged (and there is some suspicion that he may have been blud...

Re: I live in Vancouver

I am skeptical as Hell of business oriented outfits like Alcor. That said, I worry that you have the reverse problem - not enough customers. If you really only have on the order of six patients, you can't possibly have earned enough to become self a sustaining just from your cryonics practice. It's ...

Re: Surviving World War III

Something else to think about, and you might find the concept silly but it merits consideration, is the possibility of a Dr. Frankenstein scenario, where you're stormed by angry mobs in the event of societal upheaval. Salem's in Eastern Oregon, which as I understand it (not to get political) is fair...

Re: Surviving World War III

What about lead shielding? Cheaper than a full vault and protective against radiation. Surround your patients with a few lead shields and they ought to be alright. This again is why I prefer the brain in a jar method: if you're frozen, there needs to be a steady supply of liquid nitrogen and electri...

Re: Surviving World War III

Out of curiosity, if a brain is preserved in aldehyde in a jar and the jar is left completely undisturbed, how long will that brain remain preserved for before degrading? Could a brain in a jar of aldehyde remain intact in the state it was first preserved in for centuries? How long before the aldehy...

Re: Questions from a newb/potential patient

We're tectonically inert except for every 400 years, there's a massive earthquake 50 miles off the coast that causes a tsunami with 100 ft waves. There's a 37% risk of this in the next 50 years, and if it happened today, approximately 20,000 people would die from the tsunami. Even though this is a ...

Re: Questions from a newb/potential patient

Yes, I've been thinking about concrete vaults lately as one of the next obvious improvements. A concrete vault would have stopped the theft in Russia. The building that we just finished had originally been planned as just an underground concrete vault. For many complex reasons, it was easier to bui...

Re: Questions from a newb/potential patient

I had considered the semantic memory problem before; my assumption was that this is a problem which would largely resolve itself - if you're being uploaded, your entire frame of reference is going to shift so massively that the overwhelming majority of the semantic memories you rely on to operate bi...

Questions from a newb/potential patient

Hello. I have no background in medicine or cryonics, so please forgive me if I'm wildly off base with any of this, but I am strongly considering the process for the relatively near future and will probably base my decision upon the results of my speculation: 1. I am fundamentally uninterested in the...
