I got an email from someone suggesting that we fix a brain with aldehyde and then submerge it in resin. It was suggested that this would be more stable and cheap than storage in liquid.
Here was my response:
Hmm. That ideas has been floated around before, but I don't see much advantage over just keeping it stored in liquid. I don't think it reduces cost. Our plastic buckets are pretty durable and the liquid won't spill. It could even be argued that the liquid acts as a shock absorber. It also allows us to see the condition of the brain and to potentially add more preservative chemicals over time. It would be very difficult to undo the resin embedding if you change your mind for some reason. I'm currently leaning against it.
