New SBP Member

Post by carrie_radomski »

Hello, this is Carrie Radomski. I am a longtime cryonics activist and have been involved in the field for over 12 years. I have joined SBP as a member, though I am not currently fully funded with SBP.

I joined SBP because I support the existence of a lower-cost option for brain preservation. I am primarily an Alcor member, and Alcor remains my main provider. I am also a fully funded member of Tomorrow Biostasis and the Cryonics Institute, so if something happened to me, those organizations would all be paid.

Over the past 12 years, and especially through attending many biostasis events and conferences over the last three years, I have had the opportunity to observe many of the major organizations in the field up close. I think I have developed a reasonably informed view of their strengths, weaknesses, and operational challenges. At some point, I may write more publicly about this on my Substack.

One thing I have come to appreciate is how rare and important serious long-term philanthropy is in cryonics. I have a great deal of admiration for people like Bill Faloon and Saul Kent, who funded cryonics research, infrastructure, and oversight for decades. Their work has directly contributed to a higher standard of care for many cryonicists and, in many cases, a greatly reduced post-mortem interval. Their philanthropy has had an enormous impact on the field.

I view Jordan Sparks in a similar light: as one of the rare people who truly cares about brain preservation and is willing to support the science and infrastructure behind it. People like this do not come along very often, and I think that is worth recognizing.

My husband and I are also philanthropically involved, though not at the scale of people like Jordan Sparks, Bill Faloon, or Saul Kent, who is now in suspension. I do not expect that we will be able to make the same magnitude of impact. But I do think we can choose one area where we may be able to make a meaningful difference.

For me, that area is Standby, Stabilization, and Transport, especially reducing the post-mortem interval. I originally wrote about this in a 2016 issue of Cryonics Magazine, published by Alcor. I became busy with my children for several years, but re-entered the cryonics space in a major way at the end of 2023 after leaving my job in satellite analytics and becoming early retired.

To that end, I have become involved in governance around SST operations in the United States, including governance relating to RBS, the organization that holds the Tomorrow Biostasis contract, and Suspended Animation, which has provided full-body washout support for Alcor patients for more than 15 years.

My main focus is improving SST readiness, professionalism, and accountability. I believe that better standby and stabilization work is one of the most practical ways to improve cryonics outcomes today.

I am also bootstrapping an SST organization in Alberta to help CI members, Tomorrow Biostasis members, and hopefully SBP members as well. We would also be interested in supporting Alcor members where appropriate, though we have progressed further so far with CI and Tomorrow Biostasis. We are currently working through the legal and regulatory structure for operating in Alberta, and the early signs are encouraging. We have a meeting coming up with the funeral board in June.

One of the current challenges is finding an appropriate Medical Director or medical advisor who can help us establish medically defensible protocols and support lawful access to the medications and supplies needed for SST. I want this work to be done properly, with clear oversight, professional standards, and respect for the Canadian regulatory environment.

Cryonics has always suffered from the gap between what is theoretically possible and what is operationally available at the moment of need. My hope is to make that gap smaller, at least in the region where I can realistically have an impact.
