If you upload, would it really be you? Yes, of course. The only reason you might think otherwise is that your intuition is lying to you. There is not the slightest bit of doubt that it would really be you. Unfortunately for this issue, humans have a strong sense of self, and we've never seen any mind running on a different substrate. Therefore, intuitively, you are assigning properties to the mind that do not match reality. This is called a logical category error and is a fallacy that is equivalent to asking what color the number seven is. It's nonsensical. It's a flaw in critical thinking.
I will now explain in detail what a category error is. I'll start with another example. Let's use the example of Minecraft. It's a category error to ask where Minecraft is. You can ask where an instance of Minecraft might be running at the moment, but Minecraft itself does not have the property of physical location. It's a category error to ask that question. It's exactly the same category error to ask where Madonna's mind is. Yes, we know there is an instance of her mind running on her brain right now, but a brain and a mind are two different things. A mind does not have the property of physical location. One more example. Let's say you have two blu ray discs that both have the movie Avatar on them. It's nonsensical to ask which disc the movie is on. The movie is not anywhere. An instance of the movie is on each disc. One movie. Two instances. You must ignore your flawed human intuition in the case of uploading. You must depend entirely on logic. Once we see a mind running on a different substrate, your intuition will quickly catch up and this topic will just be an obvious non-issue. That's why I think uploading will become overwhelmingly popular soon. We are within a few decades of running small minds on different substrates, and that will give a swift kick to flawed human intuition.
"But even if it thinks just like me, it wouldn't really be me. Maybe it wouldn't be conscious. Maybe it would be more like a zombie version of me." This is another absurd objection. There's no such thing as a zombie version of Minecraft or Avatar, for example. Vitalism is the belief that a biological brain has some special ingredient in addition to its physical components. Let's say a mind would need to include something exotic like quantum fields to run properly (it wouldn't). In that case, quantum fields would just need to be part of the new substrate. There can't be any additional special vitalist ingredients that are not physical. I have very little patience for vitalism arguments.
"But wouldn't I need physical continuity?" No. That's the exact same category error as before. It's a completely nonsensical question. Minds don't physically exist, so they can't have physical continuity. Minecraft exists, but it doesn't physically exist, so it would be silly to ask where Minecraft is. It's meaningless. Plenty of things exist without physically existing. Mathematical equations come to mind. The equations exist whether or not anyone writes out instances of them. There's no such thing as physical continuity of an equation. If I erase an equation, I have not destroyed it. If I shred my blu ray disc, Avatar still exists. You must ignore your deeply flawed intuition and think rationally.
