Andy just made post about transporters, uploading, and the advantage of software over physical technology

I made an earlier claim that uploading would be well over 10,000x easier than nanobot repair. It's becoming more and more clear that uploading will win out big time over life extension and biological revival because software is just so much easier than physical technologies. It's likely that software will always be dramatically easier and that the gap will only continue to widen. As we get closer to uploading, I expect less and less pushback. It's going to be all about changing flawed intuition.
Transporters
I have a girlfriend! She just lives in another solar system 200 lightyears away!!
Some time ago I did some thinking about the implications of AGI being able to teleport... particularly the implications of data-center vs local robot compute requirements and first-mover advantage with regard to sending robots to a location that can accept transmission to upgrade onboard AI (called OTA over the air updates for robots). I never quite made the leap to whole brain emulations being able to teleport and not just manage telepresence systems!
Just need to send back the right hash and you can confirm the bits are all the same before deleting...

Re: Transporters
In software, we sort of a have a general rule to not delete even if you've verified the hash. You leave the original turned off, but still saved as a backup. Yes, light speed travel would be a huge advantage of being a WBE. I love the episode where Riker accidentally gets duplicated in the transporter. The Riker dilemma would not be a big deal either. Some WBEs could choose to make lots of permanent forks. Others could choose to reintegrate after a fork. The downside to forking is simply the cost of running the duplicate and any associated living expenses.
